I trained in Shotokan karate for a couple of years with Tony but work commitments and injuries made it easier for me to keep fit just by gym training and weights. I also did not get on with the formality of the whole traditional karate thing. Just a few years later, after struggling with depression, I wanted to do some form of martial art again. Then I found out about FFMA and I thought "Great! I can do padwork and drills - no wearing gis or having to learn kata."
Initially I did worry that I wouldn't be fit enough or good enough. Or, indeed, that it might be too 'macho' for me. My worries were unfounded. The club is so friendly and there are no egos. Everyone works at a level they are comfortable with and Tony, Alan, and the other instructors are so approachable, inspiring and informative. As well as providing a great work-out for the body, it also strengthens the mind and imparts confidence. And, on top of all that - we have a great, fun time.
As a single mother in her forties, with not the most wonderful level of fitness, I have found FFMA something that not only I can do, but also something I look forward to every week.
They also provide a separate slightly lower paced fitness and exercise class which is ideal if you want to slowly work your way into the main classes. Or you can train in that class on a permanent basis as the instruction is first class. Even my mum has started this class and she is in her sixties! So, no excuses, FFMA really is for everyone.
